Guyanese powerlifter Frank Tucker will make his first appearance at the International Powerlifting Federation World Masters Championships today in Reno, Nevada, USA.
The 74-year-old will compete in the Masters 4 93kg category against two American lifters. He is entered in both the Classic and Equipped sections of the championships, which run from October 15–24.
Tucker said training had gone well and he was confident ahead of his debut.
He is part of a five-member Guyana team that also includes Naranjan Singh, Gordon Edwin Spencer, Roger Rogers and Tremel Clarke.
Singh, who lives in the USA, will celebrate his 83rd birthday on October 20. He is set to compete in the Masters 4 83kg division next week, making his third World Championships appearance.
Having won medals for Guyana before, Singh is hoping to add to that record.
Clarke, who recently entered the Masters ranks at age 40, will contest the Masters 1 105kg category. He will look to build on his promising performance at the FESUPO competition in Chile.
His opponents will come from the USA, Chile, Great Britain, Brazil, Mexico, New Zealand and Canada.
Spencer will compete in the Masters 3 93kg Equipped division against five lifters from the USA, Finland and Estonia.
Meanwhile, Rogers, General Secretary of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation, faces seven opponents in the Masters 2 120kg category. They represent the USA, Canada, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Sweden and France.
Guyana heads into the championships following a successful outing at the South American Powerlifting Championships in Santiago, Chile. Its 17-member team won 21 medals: six gold, 10 silver and five bronze.
The World Masters Championships will bring together 507 male and female lifters from 39 countries.
