Two men are in custody following an armed robbery on a contractor at Cottonfield, Essequibo Coast, on Saturday afternoon, police said.

The 44-year-old contractor, of Richmond Housing Scheme, had arrived at a construction site to pay workers around 3.10 pm when a masked man approached him from behind.

According to police, the man pointed what appeared to be a handgun at the contractor and demanded a bag containing cash. The contractor complied and the robber fled in a black Toyota Allion.

Police did not disclose the amount stolen.

During subsequent operations across Region Two, ranks apprehended a 25-year-old taxi driver of De Kinderen, West Coast Demerara.

Police said a haversack found in a motor car contained a .45-calibre pistol, a magazine with seven live rounds of ammunition, clothing and two ski masks.

Further investigations led to the arrest of a 30-year-old man whom police described as being of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, and Linden.

Both men remain in custody at the Anna Regina Police Station. The firearm, ammunition and other items were lodged, while investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area.

Investigations are continuing.
