Guyanese charged with voting illegally in US election

A 47-year-old Guyanese citizen has been charged in New York with illegally voting in the November 2024 United States federal election.

Ronald Sheldon Baird, of Laurelton, a lawful permanent resident of the US, appeared before Magistrate Judge James R. Cho in Brooklyn on October 22, according to a statement issued by the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York on Friday.

Baird was charged by a misdemeanour complaint with voting as a non-citizen in a federal election. He faces up to one year in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors allege that Baird falsely declared himself a US citizen when submitting a voter-registration application to the New York City Board of Elections and subsequently voted in the November 5, 2024 election.

They further allege that, during a voluntary interview with federal agents, he acknowledged voting despite knowing he was not a US citizen.

Baird was among three lawful permanent residents whose cases were announced together. The charges remain allegations and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
