More than two months after 26-year-old Prakash Persaud was critically injured in a road accident at Fairfield, Mahaica, his family says they are still awaiting updates on the investigation, with no court date called and no indication of whether the driver involved will be charged.
Persaud’s mother, June Cush, told Kiskadee Watch that she has received no further updates from Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh or other police ranks regarding the status of the investigation.
Cush said she recently spoke with the husband of Samantha Reid, the driver involved in the accident, who told her that he was not in Guyana.
However, she said there has been no further communication with the family about the investigation or whether Reid will face charges.
Meanwhile, Persaud continues to recover from his injuries but remains dependent on assistance, with his mother describing the process as both physically and financially challenging.
“He’s sleeping there now, yes, he’s moving,” Cush said, explaining that doctors had warned that if Persaud did not sit up, his spine could sustain damage.
She said her son is now speaking, but still requires regular medical attention and must attend clinic appointments every week.
Despite the progress, Cush said the family continues to face difficulties transporting him for medical care.
“It’s been affecting me financially. We have to pay transportation to take him. I trying, man, I trying. Can’t give up,” she said.
The mother’s latest update comes more than two months after the August 21 accident, which left Persaud, also known as “Baby”, critically injured.
Persaud was reportedly riding an electric scooter at Fairfield when he was struck by a black, fully tinted 4×4 pickup, registration number PAL 7721, driven by Reid, the Chief Executive Officer of Sawa Investment Inc.
Following the accident, Traffic Chief Singh had said he would personally look into the matter after identifying what he described as apparent “inconsistencies” surrounding the handling of the investigation.
Reid was subsequently placed on $100,000 cash bail pending further investigations. Police also conducted a breathalyser test, which Singh said returned a result below the prescribed alcohol limit.
In a statement issued after the accident, Reid denied consuming alcohol and said Persaud had swerved into the path of her vehicle. She also expressed concern for his wellbeing and wished him a full and speedy recovery.
Persaud’s family has since raised concerns about the handling of the investigation and the lack of information provided to them. Singh had previously said he was in contact with several members of the family and had instructed the Regional Traffic Officer for Region Five to maintain clear communication with them.
However, Cush said she has received no further updates from the Traffic Chief or other police ranks.
More than two months after the accident, Persaud’s family remains focused on his recovery while awaiting answers about the investigation and whether anyone will be held accountable for his injuries.
