President Irfaan Ali and the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, yesterday held talks in Doha focused on strengthening relations between the two countries, particularly in the area of investment.

According to a statement posted on Ali’s Facebook page, the discussions were held at the Amiri Diwan as part of the President’s official visit to Qatar.

The Amir welcomed Ali and his delegation and expressed the hope that the visit would broaden cooperation between Guyana and Qatar in areas of mutual interest.

Ali, meanwhile, thanked the Amir for the reception and said Guyana was keen on deepening relations and advancing cooperation between the two countries.

The two leaders also held a bilateral meeting during which they exchanged views on current international issues and developments. No specific investment agreements or projects arising from the talks were announced.

The Guyana delegation included Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hugh Todd; Guyana’s Ambassador to Qatar, Safraaz Shadood; Director of Presidential Affairs Marcia  Sharma; and George Hallaq.

Qatar was represented at the talks by Chief of the Amiri Diwan Abdullah bin Mohammed Al-Khulaifi; Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad bin Sherida Al-Kaabi; Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi; and other senior officials.

The Amir later hosted a luncheon in honour of Ali and his delegation. An official reception ceremony had been held for the President on his arrival at the Amiri Diwan.
