Berbice River farmers receive equipment for bean production

Some of the equipment that was handed over

Farmers in eight Berbice River communities yesterday received tractors and other agricultural equipment intended to expand the production of beans for the local and export markets.

A statement from the Ministry of Agriculture said Minister Zulfikar Mustapha handed over eight tractors, eight rotovators and a harvester to support farmers at DeVeldt, Gaetroy, Fort Nassau, Sand Hills, Kimbia, Ebini, Wiruni and Wikki.

The ministry said the distribution fulfilled a commitment made to the farmers by President Irfaan Ali.

According to the statement, the tractors are designed to operate with implements which will facilitate mechanised land preparation and the planting of black-eyed peas and red beans.

The equipment is expected to enable farmers to cultivate larger acreages, improve productivity and transition from subsistence farming to commercial production.

The ministry said the intervention formed part of the government’s efforts to strengthen food security, reduce the country’s food import bill and expand agricultural production.
