Boat captain dies after incident near Kwakwani

A 60-year-old boat captain died on Friday evening after he became trapped between a tugboat and a drifting timber barge on the Berbice River near Kwakwani, police say.

Dead is Alvin Adams of New Amsterdam.

According to a police statement, the incident occurred at about 7.40 pm on the western side of the Berbice River in the vicinity of Jeep Landing, Kwakwani Village, Upper Berbice River.

Police said that initial investigations indicate that a timber barge was drifting downstream in the strong river current when a tugboat moved in to render assistance.

During the operation, the tugboat and the drifting barge reportedly collided, resulting in Adams, who was aboard the tugboat, becoming trapped between the two vessels. He sustained severe injuries.

Adams was rescued and rushed to the Kwakwani Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending doctor.

His body is at the hospital awaiting transfer to G-Jetsco Funeral Home for a post-mortem examination.

Police said investigations into the fatal marine incident are continuing.
