A 50-year-old Brazilian woman has been arrested after her husband, a fellow Brazilian gold miner, was fatally stabbed during an argument at a mining camp at Rock Creek Backdam, Puruni River, on Saturday night.
Police said the dead man has been identified as Antonio Pereira Figueredo, 53, of Manaus, Brazil.
According to preliminary investigations, Figueredo and his wife were involved in an argument at their mining camp at about 11 pm on July 18, during which he sustained a stab wound to the abdomen.
Police ranks who responded to the report found Figueredo’s body lying on the ground next to one of the camps with what appeared to be a stab wound to the abdomen.
Acting on information received, investigators recovered a kitchen knife which they suspect was used in the attack.
The woman was arrested and taken into custody at the Bartica Police Station.
Figueredo was transported to the Bartica Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by the doctor on duty. His body was subsequently transferred to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
