Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) is to construct a multi-purpose building in St Kitts-Nevis as part of its expansion plans there and jobs are to be created and value added to its business.
Details of the value of the expansion have not been provided. There has been no announcement in Georgetown of the deal.
On his Facebook page, St Kitts Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew welcomed the development and could be seen turning the sod for the new facility with DDL Chairman, Komal Samaroo and other officials.
In a statement on his Facebook page, Dr Drew said: “I was pleased to join Demerara Distillers Limited as the company marked an important new chapter in its journey here in St. Kitts and Nevis.
“For three decades, DDL has been part of our economic landscape, and this continued investment represents confidence in our country, confidence in our people, and confidence in the opportunities that lie ahead.
“As a Government, we want investment that does more than expand businesses. We want investment that creates jobs, builds skills, supports local entrepreneurs and suppliers, strengthens manufacturing, expands exports and ensures that the benefits of growth reach households and communities across our Federation.
“This is also Caribbean integration in action, a Guyanese company investing and expanding in St. Kitts and Nevis, creating opportunities that strengthen our shared regional future”.
In an earlier statement on his Facebook page, Dr Drew had disclosed a meeting on August 6th with the senior leadership of Demerara Distillers St Kitts-Nevis and Guyana’s BK Group of Companies at Government Headquarters.
The St Kitts Prime Minister had noted that operating in the Federation since 1996, Demerara Distillers (St. Kitts and Nevis) Limited has grown into one of the country’s leading manufacturers and distributors of premium spirits and beverages.
He did not disclose the nature of the discussions with the BK Group. BK’s owner Brian Tiwarie was present at the event.
