Head of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU), James Singh, has warned patrons and event promoters about reports of illicit drug use and the possible spiking of drinks at social gatherings.
In a post on CANU’s Facebook page, Singh described the reports as deeply concerning and warned that drugs could be concealed in drinks, pills, powders, vapes and confectionery.
“Social events should create memories, not victims,” he said, adding that the substances could result in overdoses, unconsciousness, permanent injury, sexual vulnerability, violence and death.
He advised patrons not to accept drinks, pills, vapes or other substances from strangers and urged them never to leave their drinks unattended. Persons who believe something is amiss should immediately seek assistance, he added.
Singh also placed responsibility on promoters and organisers to ensure that drug activity is not tolerated at their events.
“Safety is not optional. It is your duty,” he said.
According to Singh, organisers should provide visible security, ensure that staff are prepared to respond to suspicious conduct, make medical assistance readily available and encourage the use of safe transportation.
“A successful event is measured not only by the crowd or the music but also by whether everyone gets home safely,” he added.
