CDEMA says ready to support over MV Barima disaster but no request made

The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) says it stands ready to support the government following the MV Barima tragedy  but no request for help has been made.

In a statement today, it extended sympathy and solidarity with the Government and people of Guyana following the sinking of the MV Barima Ferry on Saturday, July 18, 2026. Dozens are missing and feared dead.

“Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those affected, as well as the emergency responders who are working tirelessly in response to this event.

“Whilst there has been no request for external support from CDEMA, the agency continues to monitor the situation and stands ready to support the government should assistance be requested”, CDEMA said.
