CH&PA warns contractors against burning construction waste

The Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) has warned contractors that the open burning of vegetation, construction debris and other waste materials is prohibited at all project sites.

In a public advisory, the authority directed contractors to cease all open burning and extinguish any existing fires.

The prohibition covers vegetation generated during land-clearing and site-preparation works, discarded formwork and timber, packaging materials and other construction-related waste.

CH&PA noted that open and unregulated waste burning is prohibited under the Environmental Protection Act and that breaches could result in fines, imprisonment and other legal sanctions.

Contractors are required to regularly collect and remove construction waste and dispose of it in keeping with CH&PA’s Waste Management Plan and the provisions of their respective project contracts.

The authority warned that contractors who breach the directive could also face contractual penalties.
