The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) yesterday announced that it had signed a contract with Brass Aluminum and Cast-Iron Foundry Limited (BACIF) for the construction and installation of 100 cast-iron manhole covers across Georgetown as part of the first phase of a project aimed at improving public infrastructure and safety.
According to the council, the initiative is intended to address the longstanding problem of uncovered and damaged manholes on city streets and pavements, which have posed hazards to pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.
The M&CC noted that wooden covers, which have often been used as a temporary measure, deteriorate quickly and require frequent replacement.
It said the installation of cast-iron covers is expected to provide a more durable and cost-effective solution while reducing long-term maintenance costs.
The council also said the project would contribute to improving the appearance of the city and strengthening public infrastructure.
In addition to enhancing safety and accessibility, the initiative is expected to support local manufacturing through BACIF’s involvement in producing the manhole covers.
The first phase of the project will see 100 cast-iron covers installed at locations across Georgetown. The council said the works form part of broader efforts to improve municipal infrastructure and services in the capital.
