City, union resolve issues of `mutual concern’

The meeting between the two sides

Mayor of Georgetown, Alfred Mentore, accompanied by Councillors of the City of Georgetown, Town Clerk Candace Nelson, and members of the Council’s management team, on Friday met with representatives of the Guyana Labour Union (GLU) and were able to resolve issues of “mutual concern”.

The GLU team was led by its President, Carvil Duncan.

A release from the city said that the meeting focused on several industrial relations matters of mutual concern, including employees’ working hours and other issues affecting both the Council and the Union.

The release said that the discussions were conducted in a cordial and constructive atmosphere, resulting in positive outcomes that were beneficial to both parties.

“The engagement reaffirmed the shared commitment of the Mayor and City Council and the Guyana Labour Union to fostering cooperation, maintaining open dialogue, and ensuring the continued well-being of municipal employees while supporting the efficient delivery of services to the citizens of Georgetown”, the release stated.

While such matters would ordinarily fall within the purview of the Ministry of Labour, the Mayor and City Council took the initiative to engage directly with the union to resolve the outstanding issues.

Through collaborative discussions and a spirit of mutual respect, the parties were able to reach a satisfactory resolution, the release said.
