Yogendra Sukhdeo, who was expected to go on trial yesterday for the 2023 murder of Amit Singh, instead admitted guilt before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the High Court in Demerara.
The matter saw several hours of delays before it was finally called in the afternoon. Following extensive deliberations and guidance from his attorney, Sukhdeo changed his plea from not guilty to guilty.
Singh was last seen alive with Sukhdeo at around 1:30 p.m. on the day of the incident. After Singh could not be contacted, a missing person’s report was filed at approximately 4:00 p.m., prompting a police investigation.
Investigators later arrested Sukhdeo, who led them to a residence at Lot 187 Middle Road, La Penitence, where Singh’s body was discovered wrapped in a white sheet and lying in a pool of blood.
Police subsequently recovered $7.791 million in cash, blood-stained clothing, and a piece of wood believed to be the murder weapon from Sukhdeo’s home at Diamond, East Bank Demerara.
Justice Kissoon has ordered sentencing reports, and Sukhdeo is scheduled to return to court for sentencing on July 9, 2026.
