DPI still owes Stabroek News $27.7m

More than seven months after Stabroek News closed its doors, the Department of Public Information (DPI) still owes it $27.7m for advertisements which were placed many months before.

In the 18 months before its closure DPI had owed a large sum to Stabroek News and paid in installments but far later than allowed under its credit arrangement.

Sources yesterday told Kiskadee Watch that there have been several payments since Stabroek News stopped printing on March 15th this year however $27.7m is still outstanding. The delayed payments by DPI were not the cause for the closing of the newspaper.

On March 3, 2026, Stabroek News reported that DPI owed it $87,056,431 as of February 28, 2026.
