Dredges, gold seized following crackdown on illegal Puruni operation

One of the dredges

The Ministry of Natural Resources today  reported the seizure of two water dredges and a quantity of gold after dismantling another illegal mining operation along the Puruni River.

A release from the ministry said that the exercise was conducted by the Enforcement Department of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) with support from the Guyana Police Force on September 17, 2026.

The seized gold

The team focused on mining activities within the river’s buffer zone.

Three persons associated with the operations were escorted to Puruni Landing by the police where investigations are ongoing.

The ministry  reminded all stakeholders of their obligation to comply with mining laws and regulations.
