Eccles Industrial Site road repairs underway following complaints

The ongoing works

The Ministry of Public Works says road repairs are underway at the Eccles Industrial Site, East Bank Demerara, following complaints about deteriorated conditions affecting motorists and commercial transport.

According to a ministry release, its Special Projects Unit is undertaking the works in fulfilment of a commitment by President Irfaan Ali to address the concerns.

The ministry said Public Works Minister Juan Edghill had consulted residents, business owners and other stakeholders about the execution of the project.

“Development must not happen in a vacuum,” Edghill said. “Our goal is to ensure that the people who live and work here are not just beneficiaries, but active partners in the process.”

He said direct engagement would help minimise disruptions and ensure that the works address the needs of those using the road.

The release did not specify the cost, length of roadway being repaired or a completion deadline.

Complaints about road access in the industrial area date back years. In June 2014, Stabroek News reported that businesses at the New Eccles Industrial Site were losing customers because of the condition of the access road. During a visit, the newspaper’s vehicle became stuck approximately 25 metres into the sand-and-loam road and required assistance from a bobcat to be removed. Businessman Mohamed Beepat had complained that customers were unwilling to drive or walk to the affected establishments.
