A 61-year-old electric cycle rider died on Wednesday evening after he was struck by a motor lorry along the Craig Public Road, East Bank Demerara, police said.
Dead is Lal Singh of New Hope, East Bank Demerara.
A Guyana Police Force statement said the accident occurred at about 5.10 pm and involved motor lorry GAP 5043, which was being driven by a 29-year-old man of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara and Kwatta, Suriname, and an unregistered electric cycle ridden by Singh.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the lorry was proceeding south along the eastern carriageway of the Craig Public Road in a line of slow-moving traffic when the driver reportedly felt the vehicle pass over what he believed to be a hump.
Police said the driver later heard persons shouting for him to stop. He subsequently brought the vehicle to a halt and reversed a short distance.
It was then that Singh was reportedly seen lying beneath the left side of the lorry near the front wheel with injuries about his body. The electric cycle was found nearby.
Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned to the scene and transported Singh, who was reportedly semi-conscious, to the Diamond Regional Hospital.
He was examined by a doctor and later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
His body has since been taken to Sandy’s Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police said the lorry driver was subjected to two breathalyser tests and no trace of alcohol was detected.
The driver remains in police custody assisting with investigations.
