The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) says it will increase its generation capacity in Bartica, Region Seven, with the addition of a new 2.2-megawatt generating set that is expected to be commissioned by the end of July.
In a statement on its Facebook page, the company said the new Cummins Generating Set #4 forms part of its efforts to improve electricity reliability and meet growing demand in the township and surrounding communities.
According to GPL, Bartica currently has a generation capacity of 5.3 megawatts, while peak demand stands at approximately 3 megawatts. The addition of the new unit is expected to enhance the reliability and stability of the electricity supply while providing additional reserve capacity to accommodate continued residential, commercial and industrial growth.
The company also noted that Bartica benefits from a 1.5-megawatt solar farm, which forms part of its wider strategy to diversify Guyana’s energy mix through the integration of renewable energy sources.
GPL said the combination of thermal generation and solar power is helping to create a more resilient and efficient electricity network for customers in the region.
The utility company said the investment underscores its commitment to expanding and modernising electricity infrastructure to meet increasing demand and support economic development in hinterland communities.
GPL added that it remains committed to providing safe, reliable and efficient electricity service to customers across the country.
