A 21-year-old cricketer from West Coast Berbice died early Sunday after the car he was driving crashed into a stationary tractor along the No. 28 Public Road, West Coast Berbice.
Dead is Ayinde Rogers of No. 22 Bel Air, West Coast Berbice.
According to the police, the accident occurred at about 12.05 am and involved motor car PWW 2900, which Rogers was driving, and a stationary tractor whose registration number was not immediately known.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Rogers was proceeding west along the No. 28 Public Road at a fast rate when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with the front of the tractor, which was parked on the northern parapet facing east.
The impact caused the car to overturn onto the northern parapet.
Police said Rogers sustained multiple injuries and was removed from the wreckage by public-spirited citizens in an unconscious condition. He was taken to the Bath Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by the doctor on duty.
His body was later transferred to Bailey’s Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, tributes poured in following news of Rogers’ death, with the Hopetown community Facebook page describing him as a talented cricketer who represented the village with distinction.
In a statement, the community said it was mourning the loss of a “native son,” recalling that only recently residents had been celebrating his achievements and passion on the cricket field.
The tribute described Rogers as “far more than a gifted sportsman,” saying he embodied dedication, discipline and local excellence. It noted that whenever he represented Hopetown, he carried the pride of the community, inspired young people and helped unite residents through sport.
The statement said the joy and pride he brought to the village through his performances would remain etched in the community’s memory and that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations of young athletes.
The community also extended condolences to his parents, grandparents, siblings, other relatives, teammates and friends, saying Hopetown stood with them during their time of grief.
Among those also expressing condolences was Vinceroy Hansel Jordan, who, in a Facebook post, described Rogers as “a young and talented” man whose life had been cut short far too soon.
Jordan said the tragedy had left “a deep void in the hearts of his family, friends, and everyone who knew him” and prayed that God would grant “comfort, strength, and peace” to those mourning his loss. He also extended condolences to Rogers’ relatives, including Charming, Dave, Jerral and the wider family, while expressing hope that Rogers’ memories would continue to serve as a source of love and inspiration.
Police are continuing their investigations into the fatal accident.
