The Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW), in partnership with the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL), donated $25 million to the Hope, Empathy, Aid, Resilience and Trust (HEART) Initiative yesterday.

The Department of Public Information (DPI) said that the donation was presented during the closing ceremony of the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League at the National Stadium in Providence.

The HEART Initiative was established by President Irfaan Ali to provide long-term support to survivors and families affected by the July 18 MV Barima tragedy.

DPI said that it brings together humanitarian assistance, psychosocial and trauma counselling, social services, spiritual guidance and other forms of care to help families heal and rebuild.

The President had made it clear that the initiative is not intended as financial compensation, DPI said. Instead, it represents the nation’s commitment to standing with survivors and bereaved families throughout their recovery.

The president also announced the establishment of a national body, comprising “respected religious and civil society leaders”, to oversee and coordinate the initiative.

He also called on citizens, organisations and the private sector to support the HEART Initiative.

DPI said that the $25 million contribution fulfils an agreement between the Guyana Amazon Warriors and the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League to donate all proceeds from ticket sales for the tournament final towards educational and humanitarian assistance for families and individuals affected by the MV Barima tragedy.

The MV Barima capsized off the Essequibo Coast on July 18, 2026, claiming dozens of lives and leaving many families devastated.
