The Kangaruma Village Council has pledged $1 million towards assisting victims and families affected by the tragic MV Barima incident.

The commitment was communicated in a letter dated August 22, 2026, addressed to Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed, in which the council said the contribution would be made through the Office of the Leader of the Opposition.

The council, representing residents of Kangaruma Village in the Middle Mazaruni River, Region Seven, said the decision was motivated by the profound impact the tragedy has had on families, loved ones and communities.

“As a community, we recognize the profound impact this tragedy has had on the families, loved ones, and communities affected,” the council stated.

It said the contribution was intended to demonstrate solidarity, compassion and support for those grieving and facing hardship following the tragedy.

The council said the $1 million would be channelled through the Opposition Leader’s office, with the intention that the funds be directed towards providing assistance to victims and affected families.

The council also extended condolences to those affected by the incident, describing the contribution as a modest but meaningful expression of solidarity from the residents of Kangaruma.

“May our contribution, though modest, serve as a meaningful expression of our community’s solidarity and support,” the letter stated.

The village council ended by requesting acknowledgment from Mohamed and guidance on the arrangements for making the donation.

The contribution comes as families continue to grapple with the devastating aftermath of the MV Barima tragedy, which claimed lives and triggered widespread calls for support for those affected.

The Kangaruma Village Council said its donation is being made on behalf of both the council and the residents of the community.
