Man shot by police at Schoonord after allegedly pointing air gun

A 27-year-old man was shot by police on Wednesday afternoon after he allegedly pointed what appeared to be a firearm at a rank along the Schoonord Highway, West Bank Demerara.

According to a police statement, ranks from the La Parfaite Harmonie Police Station responded at around 1.45 pm to a report of a man walking along the highway with what appeared to be a firearm tucked into his waist.

Police said that when a rank approached him, the man allegedly drew the object and pointed it in the rank’s direction. The rank then discharged one round, following which the man reportedly dropped the object and fled into a nearby trench and rice field.

He was subsequently apprehended and was observed with what appeared to be a gunshot wound beneath his left armpit.

The man was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he remained under police guard while receiving treatment.

The object recovered at the scene appeared to be a black Glock air gun and was lodged as evidence, police said. Investigations are continuing.
