One dead after scaffold hits GPL lines at New Houston, two injured

The scaffold

One person died following an electrocution at a work site in the New Houston area this morning after a scaffold reportedly came into contact with a Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) electrical wire.

The death was confirmed in a release issued by GPL which said that the scaffold had reportedly rolled away from a building and came into contact with one of its 13.8 kV primary distribution lines.

The incident also resulted in injuries to at least two other persons, the company said.

GPL extended condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased and expressed sympathy to those injured, while wishing them a full and speedy recovery.

The power company also urged contractors, workers and members of the public to exercise extreme caution when working near electrical lines, poles and other network infrastructure.

GPL said that appropriate safety measures must always be maintained to prevent similar incidents.

This is the latest in a series of Occupational Safety and Health deaths. The Ministry of Labour has been silent on these incidents which were the subject of a recent Kiskadee Watch editorial.
