More than 75 houses have been completed under the government’s Yarrowkabra homestead programme for women-led households, Minister of Housing Collin Croal says.
The beneficiaries have been selected, while work is now concentrating on the agricultural component of the pilot, he said during an interview with the Department of Public Information.
Each property is expected to include a shade house to help beneficiaries generate income, supplement their salaries and meet mortgage payments.
Croal said the government intended to reproduce the model elsewhere if the pilot proved successful.
The initiative was announced by President Irfaan Ali in 2024 as a $6 billion housing and agriculture project targeting single mothers.
At that time, Stabroek News reported that the plan envisaged 500 houses on approximately 100 acres at Yarrowkabra. Each lot was expected to have coconut or breadfruit trees and a 20-by-40-foot shade house.
The original announcement said the project would be implemented through collaboration among the housing, agriculture and human services ministries, the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission and the Office of the Prime Minister.
Croal did not say when the completed houses would be occupied or when the shade houses would become operational.
