Parakeese Area Council calls for apology from gov’t over MV Barima disaster, resignation of transport ministers

The Parakeese Area Council, Moruca in Region One yesterday called for an apology from the government over the MV Barima disaster that claimed at least 73 lives and the resignation of ministers responsible for the transport sector.

In a statement, the council said that yesterday the Parakeese Area held its General Community Meeting. During the meeting, the Area Secretary, Sir Godfrey Daniels, spoke on behalf of the Area Council regarding the recent MV Barima tragedy. His remarks deeply moved those in attendance, and the atmosphere was filled with emotion, the statement said.

Following his address, all residents present expressed their support by a show of hands for the release of a statement on behalf of the Parakeese Area Council and the people of Parakeese.

The statement said that “With heavy hearts and spirits weighed down by grief, we, the Amerindian people, the First Peoples of Guyana, raise our voices in sorrow and in hope. We can no longer remain silent. We demand justice, accountability, and a future where our people are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve”.

It said that the tragedy of the MV Barima has left indigenous communities devastated.

“A state-owned ferry, nearly a century old, carried our brothers, sisters, children, and elders under conditions that should never have been accepted. Allegations of poor oversight, including the transport of passengers and cargo without proper documentation, have deepened the pain of a disaster that claimed more than seventy precious lives, while many others remain unaccounted for.

“Behind every number is a name. Behind every name is a family. Homes have been torn apart, generations forever changed, and dreams washed away in the cold, dark waters. Parents mourn their children. Children cry for parents who will never return. Entire families have been left with an emptiness that words cannot describe”, the statement read.

In honour of those lost and for the generations yet to come, the council called for:

1. A sincere and public apology from the officials responsible for the management and oversight of the ferry service.

2. A truly independent and transparent investigation to establish the full truth.

3. Every possible effort to recover the ferry, so that grieving families may find answers, closure, and the opportunity to lay their loved ones to rest with dignity.

4. Ministers and all those entrusted with responsibility for the nation’s transport and maritime safety to accept accountability and resign immediately.

5. Professional counselling and support be provided for all survivors and grieving families.

The statement added: “Today, we stand together, not divided by village, region, or political belief, but united as one people. We demand safer transportation, stronger systems, and equal respect for Amerindian communities in every sector of national development. Never again should our people endure such a preventable tragedy.

“We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who answered the call in the search and rescue efforts, the brave fishermen, private boat operators, emergency responders, volunteers, members of the public, and all agencies, including the Government of Guyana and the Opposition, who offered assistance during this difficult time”.
