The Police destroyed thousands of suspected cannabis plants and seedlings during a joint eradication exercise in the Upper Berbice River last Thursday but no arrest was made.
According to a statement from the Guyana Police Force, ranks led by a Gazetted Officer carried out the operation between 5:00 a.m. and 8:50 p.m. at Friendship Sandhill Village and Wiruni Savannah.
At Friendship Sandhill Village, officers located a cannabis cultivation site spanning approximately two acres. Police said the field contained an estimated 10,000 suspected cannabis plants, ranging in height from two to four feet.
During the search, ranks also discovered a makeshift camp believed to have been used in connection with the cultivation of the crop. A nearby nursery containing about 4,140 suspected cannabis seedlings was also uncovered.
The operation continued at Wiruni Savannah, where police said they found a drying camp measuring about 40 feet by 15 feet. The structure contained a quantity of suspected dried cannabis leaves believed to have been prepared for processing or distribution.
According to the police, all of the suspected cannabis plants, seedlings, dried cannabis and the makeshift and drying camps were destroyed by fire at the scene. The force estimated the value of the narcotics destroyed at $2,395,316.
No one was arrested during the exercise, and police reported that the operation was carried out without incident.
