Record prize purse sets stage for blockbuster Guyana Cup at Rising Sun

The Rising Sun Turf Club is ready to host Guyana’s most lucrative day of horse racing.

Guyana’s richest day of horse racing will take centre stage on Sunday, August 23, when a strong international field competes in the historic Guyana Cup at the Rising Sun Turf Club.

Fourteen races are scheduled from 09:00h, with more than $66 million in cash and prizes at stake. Favourable weather conditions are expected, while months of preparation have paved the way for one of the country’s most anticipated sporting events.

The headline attraction will be the Banks DIH-sponsored one-mile feature race, which has drawn 10 horses. Defending champion Dataman, the leading horse from Master Z Racing Stable, will begin from gate one as he attempts to retain the prestigious title.

Former Guyana Cup winner Olympic Kremlin will also command attention when he makes the final start of his career. Connections will be hoping the popular Slingerz Racing Stable horse can produce a fairytale finish.

Five newcomers are included in the feature field, adding another layer of intrigue to the contest. Jockeys from Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and Brazil will be involved, while overseas fans have already travelled to Guyana for the event.

Colin Ross enters the Guyana Cup as the country’s leading jockey and will partner Stat from gate two in the feature. The field also includes Frontline Warrior, Mapa Do Brasil, Olympic National, Santorini, I’m Sam, Vitruvian and Sand Pipes.

The full feature-race field is:

1. Dataman (USA) — Yovin Kissoonchand

2. Stat (USA) — Colin Ross

3. Frontline Warrior (USA) — Michael Semple

4. Mapa Do Brasil (Brazil) — Dillon Khelawan

5. Olympic Kremlin (Brazil) — Acendir Gulart

6. Olympic National (Brazil) — Francisco Chaves

7. Santorini (USA) — Wilkey De Xavier

8. I’m Sam (USA) — Kaua Gonsalves

9. Vitruvian (Brazil) — Alexandre Correia

10. Sand Pipes (USA) — Jose Da Silva

Away from the racing, organisers have planned a family fun day featuring a dedicated children’s zone and activities throughout the venue. Spectators will also benefit from a wider view of the track.

One fortunate patron will leave Rising Sun with a new SinoTruk pick-up truck, compliments of Jumbo Jet.
