An unfinished home being built for a mother and a two-year-old child was allegedly set on fire at Schoonord at around 3:43 a.m. yesterday, with a source telling Kiskadee Watch that the incident is suspected to be part of a year-long pattern of abuse, threats and alleged arson.
The source said the latest incident is suspected to be connected to the mother’s former partner who is currently out of the country.
The source said the mother received a call from a neighbour shortly after the fire and immediately suspected that the call was related to the incident because of previous experiences involving fires and alleged threats.
The source said the mother has previously reported several incidents to authorities while seeking help over alleged abuse and threats.
According to a statement from Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed, multiple reports were made to police concerning alleged abuse and threats, including a reported threat to burn down the home.
The statement said reports were made to Deputy Commissioner, Commander of Division 4A Simon McBean, and Assistant Superintendent Rodwell Sarabo.
The source also confirmed that reports were made following previous fires.
According to the information provided, the mother’s gate and entire fence were set on fire last year after the mother attempted to leave the relationship.
Two nights later, a brother-in-law’s bus was allegedly set on fire at La Grange.
After family members went to check on the situation and returned home, another vehicle was allegedly set on fire less than half an hour later.
The Opposition Leader’s statement said two additional incidents occurred on August 24 and 28, 2025, when the grandmother’s house on Middle Road, La Penitence was allegedly targeted.
Both incidents were reportedly reported to the Ruimveldt Police Station.
The latest incident has now escalated to the alleged burning of the unfinished home being built for the mother and child.
The source said the mother has also received threats concerning physical harm, including an alleged threat to burn the mother’s face with acid.
A restraining order is reportedly already in place, but the source said the mother remains fearful and believes further incidents could occur.
The source said the mother is particularly concerned because the child is expected to spend the weekend with the child’s father.
The mother also reportedly has an elderly grandmother and a disabled mother living at the current residence, making relocation difficult despite the security concerns.
The source said repeated attempts have been made to seek help, including from persons in positions of influence.
The source said the mother has contacted multiple persons for assistance but continues to feel as though nothing is being done.
The source said the mother also approached Azruddin Mohamed for assistance. According to the source, Mohamed indicated that time was needed to determine how the matter could be addressed and that the matter was being worked on.
The Opposition Leader’s statement also questioned the response of Minister of Human Services and Social Security Dr Vindhya Persaud and Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond, asking how many more women must report threats, endure abuse and live in fear before meaningful action is taken.
The statement described the latest incident as an escalation following the previous alleged attempts at arson and called for a thorough investigation.
The source said the mother is now appealing for urgent assistance as fears continue to grow over the alleged threats and suspected attacks.
