Twenty-seven-year-old shopkeeper Zamal Samuels is currently on trial at the High Court in Demerara, accused of beating customer Aaron Conyers to death at Black Water Village, North West District.
Samuels appeared before Justice Peter Hugh, where he entered a plea of not guilty to the charge.
The State’s case is being presented by prosecutors Pablo Dubraj and Geneva Wills.
The charge stems from allegations that Samuels caused Conyers’ death sometime between March 27 and 28. 2023 at Black Water Village in the North West District.
The matter had previously been before the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court, where Samuels initially faced a manslaughter charge and was not required to enter a plea.
In April, his attorney applied for bail, arguing that Samuels was not a flight risk and wanted an opportunity to clear his name.
Magistrate Sunil Scarce subsequently granted Samuels $500,000 bail, subject to strict reporting conditions.
The preliminary proceedings were later adjourned to November 20.
The matter has since been transferred to the High Court, where Samuels is now facing trial before Justice Hugh.
