A small fire at Westminster Secondary School on the West Bank of Demerara last evening was quickly extinguished after a freezer in the school’s canteen reportedly sparked during weather-related power fluctuations.
According to the Ministry of Education, the incident occurred amid adverse weather conditions affecting parts of the country.
Police ranks from the Parfaite Harmonie Police Station responded to the scene and used two fire extinguisher balls that had been supplied by the Guyana Fire Service to put out the blaze.
The ministry said the fire was contained within a short time and that there were no injuries or structural damage to the school building.
Fire officers subsequently conducted checks of the premises to ensure the building was safe, while the Guyana Fire Service remained on alert.
The ministry also said it is monitoring reports of weather-related disruptions across the country and is working with regional authorities, school administrators, emergency services and utility providers to ensure the safety of students and staff.
