Taxi driver remanded over $3.8m robbery on Woolford Ave

A 29-year-old taxi driver was remanded to prison yesterday  after he was charged with two counts of robbery under arms in connection with a robbery on Woolford Avenue, Georgetown.

Dexter Leung, of Lot 67 Hunter Street, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, where the charges were read to him.

It is alleged that on August 18, 2026, at Woolford Avenue, Georgetown, Leung, while being accompanied by others and armed with a knife, robbed Dennis Ragnauth of $3,815,540 in cash, along with a Samsung Galaxy cellular phone valued at approximately $70,000, property of the Central Islamic Organisation.

The second charge alleges that during the same incident, Leung, while armed with a knife and accompanied by others, robbed Ragnauth of an additional $70,000 and a Samsung Galaxy cellular phone valued at approximately $75,000, property of Ragnauth.

Leung’s attorney made an application for bail, telling the court that the accused is a 29-year-old taxi driver, the father of four minor children and is in a common-law relationship.

Counsel argued that Leung was not the person who carried out the robbery, but had merely transported a passenger.

According to the defence, Leung picked up the individual and was subsequently asked to wait. Counsel said Leung later re-entered his vehicle and did not see or know that a robbery had taken place.

The attorney further told the court that Leung had offered to assist police in identifying the passenger whom he had transported.

The prosecution opposed the bail application, indicating that investigations were still ongoing.

The court heard that CCTV footage allegedly captured the perpetrators proceeding along the street before entering a white Toyota vehicle bearing registration number PAH 2892.

The prosecution indicated that further investigations were required before the matter could proceed.

Following the submissions, the magistrate declined to grant bail at this stage.

The matter was adjourned to September 15, 2026.
