Teen killed, man injured after card game dispute at Westminster

A 17-year-old construction worker was fatally stabbed and another man injured during a confrontation following a card game at Westminster, La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, on Sunday afternoon, police said.

Dead is Akeem Bannister, called “Boy”, of Westminster. Police are seeking a 30-year-old vendor from the area.

According to police reports, the incident occurred near a supermarket between 3.30 pm and 3.55 pm.

An argument following a card game led to a confrontation between a 26-year-old construction worker and the vendor. Police said the construction worker allegedly armed himself with a cutlass and chopped the vendor on his right hand.

The vendor reportedly drew a knife and the two scuffled, during which the construction worker sustained injuries.

Bannister subsequently became involved in the confrontation and was allegedly stabbed three times in his lower limbs by the vendor.

Both injured construction workers were taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where Bannister died while receiving treatment. The 26-year-old was also treated.

Police said CCTV footage from the surrounding area has been obtained and is being reviewed. The suspect remains at large as investigations continue.
