Trial of cop in accident death of Navindra Mahes, 15, to start August 17

15-year-old Navindra Mahes

The trial into the death of 15-year-old Navindra Mahes  while using a pedestrian crossing will come up on August 17 at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

According to a poster shared on the “Justice for Navindra Mahes” Facebook page, the dates fixed for the trial are August 17 to 20.

“Please stand beside me in court so I do not stand alone,” Mahes’ mother, Jennifer Arjun, is quoted as saying on the poster.

An Eastville Police Corporal was on November 4, 2025 placed on $500,000 bail after being charged with death by dangerous driving. The accused, Yonelle Cumberbatch, 35, appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Abigail Gibbs.

The charge alleged that Cumberbatch on Monday, October 30, 2025 while in her motorcar licence # PAB 214 at Success Public Road, East Coast Demerara, caused the death of Mahes by driving dangerously.

Despite the fact that courts are meant to be open to the public, a policewoman prevented reporters from entering the courtroom that day. It was unclear if the magistrate was aware of this.

Police in a statement had said they were investigating the fatal accident that occurred around 07:30 hours that claimed the life of Mahes, a student of Annandale Secondary School, who resided at Lot 44 Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara.

Enquiries disclosed that the car was proceeding west along the northern carriageway on Success Public Road in the southern driving lane, where the ‘third lane’ was active at that time.

Video footage revealed that Cumberbatch continued to proceed further west, while the pedestrian was standing at the median that separates the two carriageways, facing north.  The student then attempted to cross the road in a northern direction, using the pedestrian crossing, and in doing so, the left-side front portion of the car collided with the schoolboy.

As a result of the collision, Mahes fell on the roadway, where he suffered injuries to his body. He was picked up by public-spirited citizens and escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit.

On arrival at the hospital, Mahes was seen and examined by doctors on duty, suffering from head injuries and a fractured right leg. He succumbed to his injuries at 09:56 hours while receiving medical treatment.
