The We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) has renewed calls for urgent financial assistance to families affected by the MV Barima tragedy, following outreach visits to Port Kaituma and Mabaruma led by Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed.
According to the party, its team met with approximately 30 survivors, many of whom suffered personal and material losses and are yet to receive financial compensation.
The outreach also brought the team face-to-face with grieving families, including some with as many as five relatives still missing, as well as relatives of 28 people who died in the tragedy.
WIN said the impact of the disaster has been particularly devastating for families who lost their sole breadwinner, leaving them to cope with grief while facing financial hardship and uncertainty.
Business owners affected by the tragedy also presented receipts for goods and supplies purchased prior to the incident, which were subsequently lost. The party said those individuals are now facing substantial financial losses and uncertainty about how they will recover.
WIN is calling on the Government to make an immediate interim payment of $5 million to each affected family to provide urgent relief.
The party said that through its HERO donation drive, it has already provided financial assistance to several affected families but stressed that significantly more support is needed.
“The families affected by the MV Barima tragedy must not be left to bear this burden alone,” WIN said.
