A woman was struck by a stray bullet yesterday afternoon after three armed bandits, fleeing police on separate motorcycles, opened fire in the vicinity of Schoonord, West Bank Demerara.

A police source told Kiskadee Watch last  night that the incident occurred at approximately 4.30 pm near the Guyana-China Friendship Park, formerly known as the Joe Vieira Park, where the woman was at the time of the shooting.

According to the source, police ranks were pursuing the suspects from Georgetown when the men allegedly began discharging rounds at the officers in an attempt to evade capture.

“The police were in pursuit of armed robbers from Georgetown and they were firing at the police when a stray bullet hit the woman in the park, the source said.

Despite the exchange of gunfire, police managed to apprehend two of the suspects, while a third suspect escaped.

The injured woman was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she received medical treatment and was subsequently discharged.

The police source further disclosed that the suspects were wanted in connection with a robbery committed at a mall some time ago. The two men are currently being held at the Ruimveldt Police Station as investigations continue.
