Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, says that the fully operational shade tunnel at the Timehri Prison aligns with the government’s commitment to modernizing prison infrastructure and revolutionizing inmate rehabilitation.
The Rotary Club of Garden City handed the facility over to the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, with $7m funding from the Massy Foundation (Guyana).
According to Elliot, the agriculture programmes are part of the government’s wider rehabilitation efforts and aim to equip prisoners with practical skills, promote self-sufficiency and further reduce the recidivism rate.
“Through these programmes, inmates are encouraged to develop responsibility, independence and skills that can support their return to their communities,” Elliot stated.
A release from the GPS said that the 100-foot by 30-foot structure will benefit about 30 women in custody by giving them opportunities to grow vegetables and learn agricultural skills to support their reintegration into society.
Meanwhile, Elliot said the GPS has made significant strides in bolstering its collaboration with key stakeholders over the years.
Elliot added that opportunities to collaborate remain, and the Prison Administration welcomes private and public individuals and entities to join in making a meaningful impact on the lives of the men and women in the care of the GPS.
The Director of Prisons expressed appreciation to the Rotary Club of Garden City and the Massy Foundation (Guyana) for their contributions to the prison service’s rehabilitation efforts.
