Chelsea Edghill delivered Guyana’s best result during yesterday’s table tennis singles action at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games, sweeping her opening opponent before bowing out in the Round of 32 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Edghill dismissed El Salvador’s Samirah Muñoz 4-0 in the women’s singles Round of 64. She won the four games 11-6, 11-7, 11-9 and 11-2 at the Table Tennis Pavilion.
The Guyanese controlled the opening two games before facing her toughest challenge in the third. Muñoz briefly moved ahead, but Edghill remained calm and recovered to win 11-9.
She then dominated the final game 11-2 to complete an impressive start to her campaign.
However, Edghill faced a much tougher challenge later in the day against Puerto Rico’s Adriana Díaz. The Puerto Rican secured a straight-games victory, winning 11-1, 11-7, 11-5 and 11-6 to advance to the Round of 16.
Jasmine Billingy was eliminated in the women’s Round of 64 after losing 4-0 to another Puerto Rican, Kristal Melendez. The scores were 11-4, 11-8, 11-2 and 14-12.
Billingy saved her best effort for the fourth game, when she built a lead and pushed Melendez to deuce before the Puerto Rican closed out the contest.
Guyana’s four men were also knocked out in the Round of 64, although Shemar Britton and Elishaba Johnson produced competitive performances.
Britton won the opening game 11-5 against Mexico’s Dario Arce and appeared capable of challenging for a place in the next round. Arce, however, adjusted quickly and won the following four games 11-3, 11-7, 11-3 and 11-6 to take the match 4-1.
Johnson pushed Costa Rica’s Jeison Martínez close in three of their four games. After dropping the opener 11-4, Johnson narrowly lost the second and third games 12-10 before Martínez sealed the match with an 11-8 victory in the fourth.
Malachi Moore was beaten 4-0 by Cuba’s Rene Mendez. Moore improved as the match progressed but lost 11-2, 11-6, 11-7 and 11-8.
Niran Bissu also suffered a straight-games defeat against Wu Jiaji of the Dominican Republic, going down 11-3, 11-1, 11-6 and 11-6.
With the singles competition now over for the Guyanese contingent, attention turns to Wednesday’s mixed doubles matches.
Elishaba Johnson will team up with Jasmine Billingy, while Shemar Britton will partner Chelsea Edghill as Guyana seeks a stronger showing in the doubles competition.
