Justin Greaves struck an unbeaten half-century while captain Roston Chase provided valuable support as West Indies reached 239 for five against Pakistan on a rain-interrupted opening day of the second Test at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

West Indies, who won the toss and chose to bat, were limited to 74 overs but recovered from the loss of five wickets through an unbroken 66-run partnership between Greaves and Chase.

Greaves ended the day unbeaten on 64 from 125 balls, including eight fours, while Chase was not out on 36 from 70 deliveries with five boundaries.

The home side made a steady start before Tagenarine Chanderpaul was caught by Sajid Khan off Mohammad Ali for 15, leaving the score at 49 for one in the 10th over.

Brandon King then played positively, striking nine fours in a 50-ball 46. However, he fell four runs short of a half-century when he was trapped leg before wicket by Ali Usman at 65 for two.

Pakistan tightened their grip when Kavem Hodge was caught behind by Mohammad Rizwan off Sajid Khan for 10. Hodge faced 44 deliveries as West Indies slipped to 91 for three in the 26th over.

Amir Jangoo attempted to rebuild the innings but was also caught behind, this time off Ubaid Shah, after making 26 from 55 balls. His dismissal left West Indies on 120 for four.

Captain Shai Hope then added 53 runs with Greaves before Mohammad Ali removed him for 29. Hope’s 68-ball innings included three fours and one six, with his wicket leaving West Indies at 173 for five in the 51st over.

Greaves and Chase safely negotiated the remainder of the day, guiding West Indies beyond 200 and preventing Pakistan from making another breakthrough before the close.

Mohammad Ali was Pakistan’s most successful bowler, claiming two wickets for 49 runs from 17 overs, including five maidens. Ali Usman returned one for 64 from 25 overs, while Sajid Khan took one for 55 from 22 overs.

Ubaid Shah claimed one wicket but conceded 56 runs from nine overs, while Salman Agha bowled one wicketless over for four runs.

West Indies will resume their first innings with Greaves and Chase seeking to extend their partnership and push the total towards a strong first-innings score.
