Guyana’s Elite League champions Slingerz FC advanced to the round of 16 of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Shield with a commanding 4-0 victory over SWA Sharks of the Turks and Caicos Islands on Thursday in Trinidad and Tobago at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

Kemar Beckford continued his impressive goalscoring form by netting twice in the opening half, while Neron Barrow and Derrel Garcia added second-half goals to complete the comfortable win.

Beckford, Slingerz’s leading scorer during the Elite League season, opened the scoring in the eighth minute as the Guyanese side quickly took control of the match.

Slingerz maintained most of the possession and doubled their advantage on the stroke of halftime, with Beckford finding the net again in the 45th minute to send his team into the break with a 2-0 lead.

The Guyanese champions continued to control proceedings in the second half but had to wait until the 75th minute for their third goal. Barrow, who joined Slingerz on loan from Jamaican club Waterhouse FC, scored to place the result beyond doubt.

Trinidadian midfielder Garcia completed the scoring in the 84th minute as Slingerz sealed an emphatic start to their regional campaign.

Slingerz will now face Trinidad and Tobago’s Prisons Service FC on July 25.

Earlier on Thursday, Grenada’s St. John’s SC defeated Dublanc FC of Dominica 3-1 in the opening match of the tournament. Saint Lucia’s La Clery then closed the day with a 2-1 victory over Anguilla’s Roaring Lions.
