GOAL initiative aims to turn Guyana’s sporting success into lasting opportunities

Several athletes, coaches and sport administrators were present at the launch of the GOAL Sports Scholarships Programme yesterday.

With Guyanese athletes securing more than 600 international medals in 2026, the Government has introduced a sports scholarship programme designed to ensure that success in competition is supported by academic and career development.

The GOAL Sports Scholarships Programme was launched yesterday at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, providing sportspersons with an opportunity to pursue higher education without abandoning their athletic ambitions.

Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle revealed at the launch that Guyana’s athletes won 534 medals in international competitions last year. He said that total had already been surpassed by August 31, 2026, when the country’s medal count climbed beyond 600.

“The figures do not lie,” Ninvalle declared as he highlighted the continued improvement in Guyana’s international sporting performances.

However, he said athletic progress must be accompanied by stronger educational opportunities. Ninvalle described the previous divide between sport and education as a period of “academic asphyxiation” and said the new programme would help athletes overcome barriers that had restricted their overall development.

The initiative will provide access to higher education, training, mentorship and educational resources. It is intended to prepare athletes for immediate sporting challenges as well as life and employment after competition.

A GOAL representative said the value of the programme extends beyond earning an academic qualification.

“It is about opening doors for you. It is about creating opportunities for you,” the representative said, explaining that athletes must be equipped for both their next event and the next stage of their lives.

GOAL has awarded more than 29,000 scholarships since its establishment as part of its mission to expand access to education and professional development across Guyana.

The sports programme is being delivered through a partnership involving GOAL, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Ministry of the Public Service, Ministry of Education and National Sports Commission.

Officials said athletes would have access to the initiative regardless of their location or social background. The collaboration is expected to support sportspersons from hinterland and coastal communities while creating a new generation capable of contributing to sport as athletes, professionals and administrators.

Launched under the theme, “Strengthening Sport in Guyana through Education,” the programme complements the Government’s increased investment in sporting infrastructure and development. Its wider goal is to ensure that the country’s growing medal tally is matched by meaningful educational and career opportunities for the athletes responsible for that success.
