Triple Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) gold medallist Raekwon Noel encouraged dozens of young swimmers to remain committed to their education and sporting development during a visit to the Colgrain Pool on Wednesday afternoon.

Noel interacted with participants in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and National Sports Commission’s Teach Them Young/Learn to Swim Programme at the Camp Street facility in Georgetown.

The record-breaking swimmer’s visit marked a return to familiar surroundings. Noel began his swimming career at approximately seven years old at the same pool before developing into one of Guyana’s leading athletes.

Currently home for a brief period before returning to the United States to continue his studies and training, Noel thanked the parents for allowing their children to participate in the programme.

He also praised the Ministry, the National Sports Commission and the Government of Guyana for investing in an initiative that introduces children to swimming and helps develop their abilities.

Noel, who studies at Indiana University, urged parents to keep their children involved in the sport, including during examination periods. He stressed that education and athletics can complement each other and should not be viewed as competing interests.

According to Noel, maintaining that balance can provide the foundation for well-rounded students who are capable of making themselves, their families and Guyana proud.

He also encouraged the young swimmers to remain focused, work hard and strive to become the best versions of themselves.
