Port Mourant set for high-stakes racing on September 27

All eyes will be on the Guyana Cup winners at the Clash at the Big Yard race meet.

Horse racing will make a grand return to the Port Mourant Turf Club on Sunday, September 27, with eight races and close to $10 million in cash and prizes on offer.

The Clash at the Big Yard Stakes and Heritage Cup meet will be the first major event following the prestigious Guyana Cup, which was held in August.

The feature event, the Clash at the Big Yard Stakes, will be open to all F1 and Lower horses and will carry an attractive purse of $2 million.

The programme will also include races for West Indian-bred two-year-olds, native-bred three-year-old maidens, JKL maidens aged four and older, L Class winners, J&K winners, and H1 and Lower horses.

With many of the country’s leading horses returning after the Guyana Cup, another competitive day of racing is expected. The Port Mourant track is a familiar battleground for horses from the Jagdeo Racing Stables and several runners from Js Racing Stables.

Jumbo Jet Racing Stables will enter the meet as the champion stable after Sand Pipes captured the Guyana Cup crown. However, Js Racing Stables also produced strong performances at the marquee event and will be looking to challenge for top honours.

Slingerz Racing Stables could also make a major impact. Its horses arrived in Guyana less than 72 hours before the Guyana Cup but have since had more time to acclimatise, placing the stable among the contenders for the Clash at the Big Yard title.

With the country’s leading stables set to battle for supremacy, the September 27 meet promises an exciting return of racing to Port Mourant.
