Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and two of his workers are expected in court tomorrow on firearm and ammunition possession charges and a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice arising from Monday night’s incident outside the home of Special Branch Head, Senior Superintendent Prem Narine.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed to Kiskadee Watch that Mohamed, Mario Mohammed and Eugene Thorne will appear on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm without a licence, unlawful possession of ammunition without a licence, and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
The charges were read to the three men following advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), which was communicated to police on Wednesday evening.
The men have remained in police custody since their arrest late Monday night. Although they were initially arrested on allegations of unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawfully discharging a firearm, the DPP did not recommend a charge for discharging a firearm.
Mohamed, through his attorney, has denied the allegations.
The Opposition Leader and his workers were travelling in a black Toyota motor car when they passed Narine’s home. Mohamed said they were seeking to document the number of police officers stationed outside the residence, which he considered an abuse of state resources.
According to the police account, Narine told investigators that he opened fire on the vehicle after hearing a sound similar to a gunshot.
Police subsequently intercepted the car and detained its three occupants. Several bullet holes were visible on the vehicle.
Mohamed has denied that anyone in the car fired a weapon and has alleged that the firearm police said they recovered from the vehicle was planted by officers.
Narine is a key witness in the ongoing extradition proceedings against Mohamed and his father.
