Leader of the Forward Guyana Movement (FGM), Amanza Walton-Desir said she yesterday discussed the deteriorating law and order situation in the country with US Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot.
In a post on Facebook, Walton-Desir said that in the meeting she raised directly “my serious concerns about the deteriorating state of law and order in our country, the treatment of peaceful protesters, abuses and excesses in the conduct of the Guyana Police Force, and the arrest and detention of the Leader of the Opposition”.
The FGM Leader said “I emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law, respecting due process, ensuring the safety and humane treatment of all persons in State custody, and protecting the constitutional rights and fundamental freedoms of every Guyanese, regardless of political affiliation.
“I also expressed my concern about the wider implications of these developments for public confidence in our institutions, the credibility of law enforcement, and the political and social stability of our country”.
Walton-Desir said that respect for human rights and the rule of law are not merely domestic concerns.
“They are essential foundations of a stable democratic society. That stability, in turn, is critical to investor confidence, economic development and Guyana’s international standing. These are matters that affect every Guyanese and warrant the attention of our international partners”, she asserted.
She added “The fight for our democracy is ours, and while we cannot outsource the fight, we must ensure that the international community fully understands what is happening in our country and the concerns and perspectives of Guyanese”.
