Sarabo-Halley accuses gov’t of ‘sugarcoating’ corruption

The government has acknowledged that it has no statistical data to show whether anti-corruption workshops conducted over the past two years have produced measurable results and this has led a WIN MP to accuse it of “sugar coating” the problem.   Governance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Gail Teixeira was responding to We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Member of Parliament, Tabitha Sarabo-Halley on June 5th when the National Assembly met after a hiatus of more than a hundred days at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, Liliendaal.   Sarabo-Halley had asked why Guyana still lacks a modern anti-corruption law and whether the government intends to bring comprehensive legislation in line with the country’s obligations under the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC).

Dear Editor, While reading a publication of a Department of Public Information article published on June 12, 2026, and  titled ‘Guyana nominates Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett for UN Secretary General – President Ali announces’, it occurred to me that something is happening in international organisations and the government of Guyana which seems to be highly discriminatory, prejudicial and hypocritical, as it relates to employment of people who are associated with politics and more specifically, people who are associated with the Opposition or are perceived to be associated with Guyana’s Opposition.

Giving power to the people

It remains a contradiction that while Guyana maintains its position as the world’s fastest growing economy, the country continues to be plagued by regular power outages that have been a feature of life since the 1980s.
