Thirty-one Village Councils in the North Pakaraimas are each to receive $30 million to undertake priority community projects identified by residents, the Ministry of Public Works has announced.
According to the ministry, the initiative follows recent engagements between Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo and village leaders during the 2026 National Toshaos Council Conference.
The ministry said the projects were selected by the respective communities and will be implemented directly by the Village Councils. It added that the approach is intended to generate employment within the communities, strengthen local capacity and ensure that public investment addresses residents’ identified needs.
The initiative is being implemented through a collaboration between the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs.
The communities were not named in the Ministry’s Facebook post.
