Every single household in Thomas Hill, Mabaruma Sub-District, Region One, has been outfitted with free WiFi, using funds received from Guyana’s carbon credit sales, according to a release from the Ministry of Education.
The disclosure was made in a video on the Ministry’s Facebook page by the Community Development Council Chair, Natasha Dublin. She also said that two small homes had been built for two pensioners and the electricity supply for the community was now being worked on. She praised the government for the progress in the community.
Signed in December 2022 under the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS 2030), the agreement entails Guyana receiving payments for maintaining its forests as part of the global fight against climate change.
These revenues go directly towards Amerindian and hinterland villages, with the communities having a direct say in how their monies are spent.
The remainder of the funds is channelled towards national climate adaptation, flood defence, and renewable energy projects.
