Three masked men armed with a handgun, a baseball bat and a cutlass robbed an East Canje businessman of $10 million, representing approximately three days’ sales, last evening, police said.
The robbery occurred at about 7.35 pm at the beverage depot operated by Jagnarine Persaud, called “Balram,” 57, on the lower flat of his premises at Lot 180, No. 2 Village, East Canje, Berbice.
According to police, Persaud was in the cashier area with his wife, Shalinie Chunilall, 39, while their five-year-old son was seated outside.
Persaud told investigators that he heard his son screaming and, as he attempted to leave the cashier area, was confronted by the masked men, who demanded all his money.
Police said Persaud opened a drawer from which the men took approximately $200,000. He subsequently opened another drawer, from which they took a further $9.8 million.
The men then fled in a dark-grey motor car bearing no registration number, travelling west along the No. 2 Public Road.
No shots were fired and no one was injured.
The robbery was reported to police at about 7.40 pm and ranks visited the premises shortly afterwards. The scene was processed and photographed, and footage from CCTV cameras attached to the building was viewed and extracted.
Police said useful information has been obtained and is being pursued. Investigations are ongoing.
